Meet the completely redesigned Honda Civic, the 2016 North American Car of the Year. The prestigious award takes a car’s innovation, safety, design, handling, comfort, driver satisfaction, as well as value into account. This year, a panel of automotive journalists gave Civic 203 points, which surpassed the other two contenders.

The competitive Civic also won the award in 2006, when it shared the stage with that year’s North American Truck of the Year Award winner, the Honda Ridgeline. “The all-new Civic was developed and is built in North America, making this North American Car of the Year win even sweeter,’’ said Jeff Conrad, Honda Division senior vice president and general manager.

Featuring a new grille, headlights and taillights, as well as better inside materials and more space than before, the nomination comes as no surprise to many Civic enthusiasts. Aside from those upgrades, the Civic offers two peppy engines – a turbocharged 1.5L and 2L. Higher trim levels with: The 2-liter engine gets 174 horsepower and The 1.5L engine produces 158 horsepower, but still achieve excellent fuel efficiency – an estimated 42 mpg highway. The entry-level Civics produce 158 ponies, which is more powerful than the 1.8L it replaces. Other notable features include the first application of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in a compact car sold worldwide.
