If seed spittin’ or rib eatin’ is one of your favorite past times or you just like reliving the Old West with your neighbors and kin, you won’t want to miss this year’s celebration of the National Day of the American Cowboy! Head on over to the Stockyards in the Historic District on July 23, 2016 for the free annual jamboree full of activities, contests and good eats the entire family will enjoy.
The National Day of the American Cowboy was voted the “Best Cowboy Tribute Event” in the U.S. by American Cowboy magazine. This special event celebrates with pride the rich history and cowboy heritage of Fort Worth. Relive the old West by enjoying a ride on an old stagecoach or the vintage railroad or attending one of the gunfight shows. The entire day runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but be sure to arrive by 11:30 a.m. to see the Fort Worth Herd Cattle Drive followed by the Cowboy Celebration Parade!
For those boasting skills fit for the Old West, there are a variety of contests. Try your luck at cow milking, quick drawing a cap gun, seed spitting, cowboy karaoke or one of the other rootin’ tootin’ competitions. For those 18 and older with a big appetite, the legendary Riscky’s Barbeque will be hosting the 10th Annual Rib-Eating Contest from 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. The winner will take home $500!
There are a variety of other fun events and exhibits such as the Chuck Wagon cooking demonstration with corn hole games, the Legends of Texas live performance, a historical fashion show, a petting zoo and the Bill Pickett History Wall Museum. You can watch a Wild West show and a real rodeo for a small cost.
