Honda Highlights Energy Management for Homes and Vehicles at RE+ 25

Electric vehicle technology keeps advancing, and Honda has unveiled another notable step forward in the EV space. During RE+ 25, North America's largest clean energy conference, Honda introduced a full-scale energy management system that enables electric vehicles to serve as generators when needed, providing power to places like a home. The system will debut on the Acura RSX, with plans to roll it out across additional models in the future.

About Honda's New Energy Management System

Honda says the chief benefit of its new energy management system is enabling two-way energy flow between an EV and a residence. Known as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H), these functions let Honda's cars act as “virtual” power plants, so owners can store electricity in their vehicles or route surplus energy to their homes when required. The system also supports selective power use and charging strategies. While the new system will first appear in the Acura RSX, Honda anticipates the technology extending to more of its electric vehicles in the future. The company notes that Honda and Acura's upcoming EVs will be able to charge themselves during lower-demand periods — when electricity is cheaper — and either keep enough energy for driving or export extra power back to the home or grid. That approach reduces homeowners' electric bills and supplies backup power during outages.

Where Will the Technology Appear?

At the moment, a utility is piloting the technology. Southern California Edison (SCE) has agreed to trial Honda's V2H and V2G system, helping both the automaker and the utility evaluate its real-world performance and refine the program. Honda's ChargeScape initiative has attracted support from other major automakers, including Ford, Nissan, and BMW. It's unclear whether vehicles outside the Honda and Acura lineup will be compatible with ChargeScape. More details are expected after the SCE pilot wraps up. Over time, participants may be able to combine the system with options like rooftop solar, home battery backups, and energy monitoring tools.
