Why Is My Car's AC Not Blowing Cold Air?

car air conditioning vents

Red-hot, sweltering, oppressive, blistering – however you want to describe it, summers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area are intense to say the least. When driving, the only thing protecting you from a shirt full of sweat is the air conditioning, and if that’s not working, you’re in for some discomfort.

If you've been wondering "why is my car AC not working," check out these common issues and what they typically mean. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, bring your car, truck or SUV to our auto shop in DFW for service.

My Car AC Is Blowing Warm Air

If your car’s AC is blowing warm air, even after the car runs for a while, it may indicate that you have a Freon/refrigerant leak or a broken compressor clutch, which should spin when working. Several other issues can also cause an AC not to blow cold air as well, including a bad solenoid, bad fuses or vacuum leaks.

The Air Pressure From My AC Is Weak

If you turn the AC from low to max and the air pressure doesn’t increase, you may have a loose hose or broken ventilation fan (blower motor). In addition, air may have a hard time getting through if there’s been abundant mold development, seals within the system are not properly in place or you need a new cabin air filter. These issues may also be to blame if you notice that the air conditioning system is producing cold air, but that it's not coming through the vents.

The Air From My Car AC Smells Bad

Frequently, this is due to an old cabin air filter that needs to be replaced. Another very common issue is mold or mildew, which may develop when moisture sits in the system.

My AC Is Making a Weird Noise

This could mean that there is a problem with the compressor, especially if you hear a rattling sound. Another common sound is squealing when the AC is turned on, which is often due to belt issues and typically unrelated to the air conditioning system.
